  1. Where are the public restrooms. Bathroom locations are likely the last thing on your mind before you plan your beach visit. But you don’t want to be caught in a situation when you have to find a bathroom immediately but you can’t find one nearby. If you cannot find restroom information on the beach’s website, you can plan on the fact that a public restroom or porta potty is not open. Make sure you go to the restroom before driving to the beach.
  2. Bugs like the beach too. If you wish to visit the beach early in the day or late in the day, you’ll find mosquitos, horse flies, fleas and other annoying insects may ruin your experience at the beach.
  3. Find a shady spot. If you suspect that finding shade could be difficult, or if you suspect that there probably will not be too many shady spots available, bring your own shade! Bring a beach umbrella, pop up tent, or similar equipment that provides shade. It’s best to use something that has enough air-flow.
  4. Is there a lifeguard on duty? Many sizeable Asheville beaches staff a lifeguard around, however you should never assume that a lifeguard being there. While walking to the beach, check to see if there are beach warning signs. Occasionally they display lifeguard patrol times.
  5. Don’t swim outside of the roped off swimming space. If there’s a designated swimming area it is probably dangerous to venture beyond the region. There could be hazardous objects under the water, be reserved for boaters, or is not monitored by lifeguards.
  6. Bring spare towels. Beach towels are essential for a fun beach experience. This is particularly important if you’re taking little kids with you or if you’re planning on getting in the water.
  7. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Apply sunscreen whenever you get to the beach. Also, sunscreen does expire over time so check the the bottle for when it expires.
